specifics, we do know the president and john boehner talked on the phone last night and that call, according to a republican familiar with it, was tense and lasted just 15 minutes. i want to bring in real clear politics reporter aaron mcpike and david hawkings, editor of the cq roll call daily briefing. good morning. so president obama sat down with barbara walters last night. here's what he said. >> most important thing we can do is make sure the middle class taxes do not go up on january 1st and i'm pretty confident that republicans would not hold middle class taxes hostage to try to protect tax cuts for high income individuals. >> so he's confident. is it almost a foregone conclusion, do you think, david, that this is going to be the first piece of the puzzle that falls into place? >> i'm pretty confident that that's going to have to be the first piece of the puzzle that falls into place. but i think it's going to take until the very last second for the pieces to fall. >> why? >> why. because -- that's a great question. because both sides, it's in both sides' best interests to make this l

boehner did not go well. i'm wolf blitzer. you're in "the situation room." >>> we begin with today's long-range rocket launch that's managed to put a satellite in earth's orbit. here's why it is important to all of us. even though north korea is one of the poorest countries and many people are starving there, the korean peninsula is the most tense, most dangerous places on earth. there are roughly one million north korean troops on it is side of the militarize zone separating from south korea. as well as nearly 30,000 u.s. forces. not only are they within strikes distance of the launch site, a long-range rocket shows north korea is on its way to developing technology to launch a rocket at the united states's west coast and hawaii. officials tell cnn that the working assumption is that the north koreans got outside help from others, including iran. so today's launch is raising some huge concerns. let's go to our pentagon correspondent barbara starr. i assume they are pretty surprised and alarmed by the successful launch over at the pentagon? >> look, wolf, because of everything you just me

cliffhanger on capitol hill as the president and house speaker boehner say they're keeping open the lines of communication one day after meeting to discuss the ongoing negotiations aimed at stopping the combination of automatic tax increases and spending cuts set to kick in less than four weeks from now. chief congressional correspondent mike emanuel live on capitol hill for us. three weeks from the end of the year, mike. any signs of progress? >> reporter: jon, it is hard to tell we know the president and the speaker of the house met privately yesterday and as we mentioned both sides say the lines of communication are open but they are not giving out any details of what was discussed or any readout of the meeting. that may be a good sign. the previous meeting was on camera. this one face-to-face privately at the white house and so perhaps they had a chance to roll up their sleeves and get into some of the tough details in terms of finding a deal on the fiscal cliff. this morning a leading republican said any deal should include the major drivers of our debt. >> the long-term indebtedness

and speaker boehner met privately at the white house. their first face-to-face meeting since they agreed last week to clear everyone else out of the negotiating room. neither side revealed anything about the meeting that was part of the agreement. only saying that the lines of communication remain open. but yesterday another influential republican, senator bob corker from the senate banking committee, said his party should consider the president's position on raising tax rates on the wealthy. >> there is a growing group of folks that are looking at this and realizing that we don't have a lot of cards as it relates to the tax issue before year end. i mean, we have one house, that's it. the presidency and the senate's in the democrats' hands. a lot of people are putting forth a theory, and i actually think it has merit where you go ahead and give the president the 2% increase that he's talking about, the rate increase on the top 2%, and all of a sudden the shift goes back to entitlements. i actually am beginning to believe that is the best route for us to take. >> that's significant, and jon, t

to get a deal with the house speaker john boehner over taxes and spending cuts. our chief political analyst gloria borger is here to take a closer look at the agreements, the disagreements, i guess there's more disagreements than agreements. let's step back and see where these two sides stand, gloria. >> let's step back from the cliff here for a minute, wolf. and you'll see that on tax, which is of course the crux of this matter, there's a huge difference between congressional republicans who want to raise $800 billion over ten years from tax increases. and of course the white house that wants to, you know, basically double that. i mean, the white house says, we need to get more revenue from taxes. if you break apart these tax number, take a look, because of course we know, the big issue, the theological issue here, wolf, is raising rates. the white house says let's raise them back to bill clinton's days. and the republicans of course say, no way, let's not raise those rates. here's what's really interesting to me, though. both sides say in the future they want to do the same thing.
